Interests and Personality

BiographyAfter running a small marketing research firm in Michigan for 17 years, I sold the business and moved to Steamboat Springs in 2000 and started working in clay. My pottery skills have come primarily from classes taken at the local college as well as summer workshops at Laloba Clay Ranch and Anderson Ranch in Aspen, CO learning from such distinguished ceramic artists as Julia Galloway, Meira Mathison, Sylvie Granatelli, Sarah Jaeger, Bonnie Seeman and Clary Ilian. I work out of a studio and gallery, called Blue Sky Pottery, located near the ski mountain here. And I recently opened an online store: www.dbabcock.etsy.com Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments about my work. I always appreciate the feedback.
InterestsWhile pottery has become a passion, I also enjoy gardening, hiking, skiing, reading, and learning about other art forms.
MusicClassical. Oldies -- James Taylor; Jimmy Buffett; Harry Chapin; Neil Young; lots of others.
FilmsThey don't make good films any more.
TelevisionThe Daily Show; not much else. Too many commercials; too much junk.
BooksAnything by Ivan Doig; well-written mysteries such as those by James Lee Burke; a wide variety of genres.

Hi, your work is very good. I had made some work in clay to, and I think the medium requires a lot of skill. My pots were always twisted in a way I didn’t intend!!! I like the way you create the organic forms. Wonderful!!!

Hi - Thanks for the compliments. Yes, there are some nice cone 5/6 porcelain clay bodies out there now. One of my favorites is Aspen Porcelain that I get from Mile Hi Clay in Denver. Best wishes.

Love your funky teapots! Is this real porcelain you can fire at cone 6 ???? When I last made pottery (about 10 years ago) the porcelain I could find had to be fired at a much higher temperature ....I had to use white stoneware, but of course, it didn't have any translucency ... I miss pottery very much, but don't have the space for a wheel and kiln (and clay flying everywhere!) anymore! (sigh!)
